Liverpool's Klopp is better than he deserves

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said Jurgen Klopp is not getting the credit he deserves for Liverpool's transformation.

Carragher, who is Liverpool's second-longest-serving player, added that while they are not the club's most exciting team, they are more ruthless than previous teams.

“The work Jurgen has done is incredible,” Carragher told the Daily Mail.

“I think it's better than what we attribute to it. When he arrived, I don't think the other big clubs – {Manchester] City, Jose [Mourinho] at [Manchester] Uni, [Mauricio] Pochettino at Tottenham, [Arsene] Wenger at Arsenal – were even worried about Liverpool. They were just seen as a team that could make the top four.

“People are talking about the famous Liverpool transfer committee model, and don't get me wrong, they have done a great job. But the most important thing for me is not just buying players, but what you do when you get them.

“How often does Klopp buy a player without putting him straight into the squad and [instead] molding them his way. It's no coincidence that a high percentage of Liverpool's transfers are made, and I think a lot of that depends on Klopp. “

Klopp guided Liverpool to their first Premier League title in 30 years, but Carragher said that doesn't necessarily make them the most exciting team the club have ever had.

“If you go back to when Philippe Coutinho was in the squad and Mohamed Salah's first season [2017-18], it was probably the most exciting team to watch. But this team also couldn't win the league, ”he added. In Klopp's early years, football was amazing.

“Football was exhilarating. Now he is more machine and ruthless. Liverpool's teams of the '70s and early' 80s were also probably more machine, relentless and littered with chunks of greatness.

“I actually think this current squad is closer to those teams than it is [Kenny Dalglish's] Liverpool of the late 80s."
